One of my favourite cities to visit, Amsterdam has everything you need for a long-weekend get away but if youve never been before it might come across a bit daunting as theres LOADS of things to do and places to see. But instead of wasting your time (and money) I thought it would be useful to write you guys a little guide - after all, Ive been to Holland like nine times and Im quite accustom to the area!
Vondelpark
Beautiful in the Winter and in the Summer, Vondelpark sits on the outskirts of Amsterdam City Centre and is around a 25-30minute walk to Central Station. In 47 hectares of beautiful greener, Vondelpark even has an open-air theatre called Openluchttheater open throughout the Summer. From bands to theatrical performances, cabaret and musical theatre, you can catch a show from June until August. If youre planning to do Amsterdam on a budget, you could easily hire a bike and go round a few times, take a picnic to sit and enjoy whilst watching all the passers by. Weve done this before and it was extremely therapeutic youll find yourself surrounded by groups of people all playing music and chilling out.
Leidseplein - pronounced Lie-ser-plane
Home to the Bulldog Palace, one of Amsterdams tourist spots when it comes to sports bars and night clubs Bulldog Palace sits in the square amongst a variety of food places and shops. Just a short stroll away youll also find the Heineken Bar, which is a great option if you fancied a more up market drink as oppose to the other hipster bars youll find in Amsterdam.
Also in the Winter this is where youll find the European Markets which are filled with braitverst and mulled wine.
Dam Square
Youll definitely pass through Dam Square on your travels Im sure. This is where youll find attractions such as Madame Tussads, designer department store Bijenkorf, and the Amsterdam Diamond Centre alongside street food and bars that overlook the square. You can also take a peek around the Amsterdam Royal Palace open to the public most days; youll find exhibitions and information on the history of Amsterdam.
In the Winter and on Kings Day theres usually a fair to in the open space.
Amsterdam Central
Now this is probably the most touristy area of Amsterdam where youll find attractions such as The Sex Museum and the Red Light District. Home to well-known bars and coffee shops such as Hill Street Booze formerly Hill Street Blues, The Grasshopper and my ultimate favourite Ballushis I mean whats not to love about 2 for 1 drinks from 6pm until 12am? Food wise youve got the famous Burger Bar that, was voted third in the top 10 Ten Burger Restaurants in Amsterdam by IAmAmsterdam.com, which comes highly recommended. You can pick which meat youd prefer, the ounce and then smother it in your choice of add ons perfect for that late night meal after a day full of drinking!
If you get a train from the airport youll get off here too at Central Station.
Have you been to Amsterdam before? Let me know what you think of it!
